I have been waiting to make these with the girls for some time now (about the amount of time it takes one person to drink two big cans of coffee). Then I finished the coffee just before the holidays and we did not have the time to make them…. Sigh.
We did however make our String Phones and my oldest daughter tried to walk on them. I told her they were way to small for that, but we could make some tin can stilts that would be perfect. When I brought out these big coffee cans she was so excited, but I wanted to prolong the project so I had the girls paint the cans first. They look much prettier painted and they girls love to paint so I figured why not.
I used a hammer and nail to make the holes for the string and then had my oldest stand on the cans with the hands down to measure how long I wanted the strings to be. I have to admit I was a little surprised that my little one was able to walk on these too. She saw her big sis doing it and had to give it a try too. She does not really lift the cans up when she walks it is more of a scoot but really who cares.
We have had some pretty harsh temps here this winter and this has made for a very fun project that has kept the kids entertained for hours in the house. I am sure once it warms up we will have to bring them outside to try but for now they work great in the house.

2 Coffee Cans
Hemp String (or other string)
Paint your Coffee Cans (optional, you can make these without painting)
Use your Hammer and nail to make a hole on each side of the can. (NOTE: You want to make the holes near the bottom of the can not near the opening.)
Insert your string through the hole and tie a knot on the inside of the string.
Messure how long you need your string then insert opposite end into hole on other side of can and tie a knot.
