Fishing Pole Cat Toy

Last year my daughter worked really hard to reach a goal in school so she could have a kitten.  Since then the two of them have been best friends and are almost never apart when at home.  He sleeps with her every night and comes running when she gets home from school.  So it is not a surprise when she comes to me on occasion and wants to make something special like the Cat Treats we made last year or the Cat House we made last month.  for her best friend Buddy (that is what she named her kitten).

This time she wanted to make Buddy a fishing pole cat toy.  When we first got him we bought one from the store and he really loved it, so much so that it was destroyed several months ago.  So I figured he would probably love to have another one, and boy was I right.  You don’t even need to be holding the thing and the cat is playing with it.  He even carries it around the house in his mouth like a lion carrying his prey home for a meal.

My daughter was able to make the entire thing all by herself.  She wanted it to be orange since Buddy is orange and she says that it is his favorite color.  You of course can make yours in any color you like.  We used a smaller wooden dowel but then made the ribbons about 9 inches long and then added the feathers to the end.  If you have a longer stick you can make the ribbon shorter if you want, but if your stick is short you want a longer ribbon so the cat does not get too close to your hands since they will be going for those feathers with nails and teeth.

Buddy played with this toy all day, tugging on it, swatting it, and carrying it around the house, and after all of that only one feather fell off which we glued back on and have not lost another one since.  I am sure over time it will get worn out but so far it has held up great and still has many hours of use left on it.  Which is a good thing since these two are sure to be playing with it for hours and days to come.

Perfect timing my cat’s fishing pole is officially on it’s last leg and I’m not sure if it was my cat or grandkids that destroyed it. I will have to try making one your colors are much pretteri than the ones in the store. Thanks for sharing ot he Four Seasons Blog Hop!
