Candy Cane Hot Cocoa

One of our favorite winter treats at home is Hot Cocoa.  During the winter it is something we have almost everyday.  But since it is the holidays I thought it would be fun to mix it up a bit and make some homemade white hot cocoa instead of just the packet stuff we buy at the store.

We first tried this recipe out with our Shamrock Hot Cocoa for St. Patrick’s Day.  This time around I thought it would be fun to mash up some candy canes and add them to the chocolate then sprinkle some on top to make it more festive.  The girls were so excited about adding the candy canes to our recipe.

My little one got a little too excited about mashing the candy canes and was smacking them with the rolling pin so hard that I had candy canes flying all over, so I decided to put them in a plastic back and then let her mash away.  I let my oldest cook everything, however I was standing right next to her to supervise and make sure no one touched the hot stove.

When cooking this candy cane hot cocoa recipe it is important NOT to bring the mixture to a boil.  You want it to get warm and melt the chocolate but if it boils you run the risk of burning it, so just heat it up to the temperature you like to drink it at.

1 Cup Milk
